Sorting via Chip-firing

Uğur Cin

Abstract: Chip-firing is a discrete process defined on a graph. We will first describe this process in a general setting and then specialize it to the infinite graph Z with labels on chips. Our main aim is to give a sketch of the proof that this process sorts the chips in this case. We will also show that the rules of this particular process can be defined using root systems. We will briefly describe root systems and end this talk with several interesting open problems coming from that direction.

No background is required.
